Restoring an Old Clapboard House in Concord

Hooked on Old Houses? Wouldn’t this   be a fun house to decorate for Christmas? A new detached garage that fits the style of the house was built with a home office   upstairs:

The architect on the project was John Battle of Battle Associates   in   Concord. The screen was made from a refurbished cast-iron fireback. Get Your «House Fix» with My Weekly Newsletter: I spent the weekend putting up our trees (a traditional one in the family room and a white one in the dining room) and things are   looking very merry around here. That meant that most of the original details were intact, but it took   a lot of work to do to make it a comfortable and family-friendly home. Here’s a floorplan of how the first floor looks now with the newly expanded kitchen in back:

The clapboard-and-shingle house is now 3,818 square feet, which includes a third floor with a guest room and a TV room. It was featured in   This Old House,   and the article says, “With its stalwart gambrel roof presiding over a busy corner in a high-profile historic district, the Victorian-era house had its own kind of period style, and no one—least of all its new owners—wanted to mess with that.”

The living room fireplace is working again now. Click here to see more, including…
