The style of this room is vintage schoolhouse with a bit of mid-century modern. It’s cute and playful enough for a baby yet has a character and sophistication that is ageless.
My advice for creating a child’s room is to design a room that your child can grow into. A room can be sophisticated and baby-friendly at the same time. Keep a consistent color palette and theme, right down to the accessories and toys that fill the room. Also, ask yourself how the toys and furnishings would look in your living room because everything eventually ends up there!
The vintage schoolhouse world map really makes the entire room. Its large scale is perfect for the blank white wall and it adds such nice colors to the room. The map set the tone of the room and I continued to look for vintage schoolhouse items to compliment it. Everyone loves the vintage map and wants to know if they can get one too. We should have grabbed more when the school was being renovated.
The biggest challenge decorating this room was the room’s odd shape. It wasn’t perfectly clear where everything should go and we had to play with some options. Also, finding a strand of garden lights that was short enough and approved for indoor use was a chore.
