Look We Love: Contrast in the Kitchen

Designer Lauren Liess paired dark soapstone and white marble in her own kitchen. Here’s an interesting new look we’re seeing in more and more kitchens — contrasting materials used in interesting ways. From Canadian House Home. More white and wood, from House Beautiful. There’s also a nice tension between the smooth cabinets faces and the island, which is covered in reclaimed wood. It makes the most of a variety of materials — white marble, stainless cabinets, butcherblock countertops, and an encaustic tile backsplash. The upper and lower cabients in this kitchen (from Katarina Grundstromer via The Brown Workshop) almost seem like they came from a different kitchen — but they go together so beautifully. The rustic wood of the lower cabinets and backsplash gives this kitchen from Elle Interior a lovely warmth. A concrete-topped island contrasts with the stainless steel counters in this kitchen from Homelife. Just a little bit of marble — still pretty, but much lower maintenance.
