The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded £179k of first phase funding, which could potentially unlock a further £875k grant, toward conversion of the B-listed St Martin’s Church, Glasgow, to house the Cathkin Braes Mountain Bike and Activity Centre.
Masterminded by Glasgow Building Preservation Trust, Elder Cannon Architects and Ardenglen Housing Association the £4.1m scheme aims to build on the success of the Commonwealth Games when the Cathkin Braes came to the fore as a mountain bike venue with the construction of off-road cycle paths.
Glasgow’s lord provost, Sadie Docherty, said: “Glasgow’s first purpose-built international mountain bike course at Cathkin Braes is already a permanent legacy from this summer’s Commonwealth Games — providing world class facilities for the people of Glasgow. I am delighted that this award from the Heritage Lottery Fund can help deliver more legacy benefits – including local jobs and improved facilities – from the development of St Martin’s Church in Castlemilk into a mountain biking and sports resource centre that can serve both those using the course and the local community.”
