Student housing developer Alumno has secured planning consent for the creation of a 199 place accommodation block at Powis Place, Aberdeen.
Designed by Carson Partners the scheme attempts to heal the fragmented streetscape the design has evolved from an earlier pre-application sketch to resolve into a five storey block with a further two setback levels.
Clad predominantly in silver-grey Ibstock ‘Nevado Geel’ facing brick the scheme will also employ Wienerberger ‘Bemmel Blue’ brick for upper storey and courtyard elevations. The main entrance and social spaces will be glazed to provide shelter and an animated frontage to the road.
Eaves lines have been considered to respond to the surrounding context with a communal green terrace animating the roofscape, with further amenity provided in the form of a landscaped central courtyard.
In their design statement Carson Partners say: «On the corner of Powis Place the building has significant bulk and presence but diminishes in scale towards Canal Road to the rear, working with the rising topography to meet the more domestic scale of areas to the north across the railway.
“The external character is one of simple, sculpted forms that rely on good proportions; crisp detailing and the tone and texture of the visually animated materials from which they are made.”
Work is expected to complete by August 2016.
