CHORA has also developed a planning tool called ‘Urban Gallery’. In order to understand a site, its context and what defines it as a place, CHORA has developed an original methodology called ‘Urban Curation’. The economically viable and sustainable proposals for the 50-hectare site will form the basis of the master plan that will be created by the new development agency of Tempelhof. This competition entry drawing must communicate to the judges the architects’ understanding of the way that the site will be altered and used once the design has been implemented. CHORA’s research laboratory was founded with the aim of understanding, modelling and transforming such places. CHORA combines architectural practice and research into complex urban situations. In partnership with Buro Happold, Gross Max and Joost Grootens, CHORA was one of the three winners of the international urban ideas competition for renewal of the Columbia Quartier and the former Tempelhof airfield in Berlin. This competition entry drawing shows the proposal in its urban context. Raoul Bunschoten, the founding director of CHORA, teaches internationally and also runs student workshops that are associated with, and contribute to, live projects at CHORA.
