Even if you keep party food simple, it’s nice to have one special item and signature cocktail for guests. For this Halloween gathering, Maxwell and Ursula made fortune telling cupcakes with charm pulls, and a yummy fizzy «mocktail» for all the kids. The cupcakes are not only delicious, but an activity unto themselves.
FORTUNE TELLING CUPCAKES WITH CHARM PULLS
In keeping with the theme, we made fortune telling cupcakes for all the kids, complete with individual charm pulls. Symbolic charms were inserted into the batter as they were made. Once baked and broken open by the lucky cupcake recipient, each one reveals a charm which represents a prediction and foretells the eater’s future.
Although charm pulling originated with cakes in the Victorian era, it’s perfectly easy to do a modern version with cupcakes as well. Here’s how:
Whip up the cupcake batter according to your favorite recipe and pour into individual cupcake pans with liners. Insert one charm into each cupcake. Make sure the charm is fully covered by the batter. You can either leave the string exposed and coming out of the top of the cupcake batter, or submerge it in the batter. Bake and decorate as you ordinarily would.
Safety Note: Before you get started, attach each charm to a knotted length of ribbon. This is important, especially if you are worried about a choking risk. If your charms are large enough, or your kids are old enough, feel free to skip the ribbon.

Display the fortunes next to the cupcakes for easy reference.
Instruct your guests to break open the cupcakes by hand, and fish out the charms before biting into them.
KIDDIE COCKTAIL
Kiddie cocktails are easy to mix up and can be done in batches right before the party starts.
For this simple recipe, we used equal parts blackberry soda, limeade or lemonade, and ginger ale or ginger beer. Ginger beer is spicier, so go with what you think your young guests will like best.
